Since July of 1981 the North Pend Oreille Valley Lions Club and the Pend Oreille Valley Railroad (POVA) have gotten together to operate several weekend excursions rides in summer and fall along the Pend Oreille River in Northeast Washington. Using three classic railroad coaches, three open-air cars converted from various rolling stock, and one caboose, this 22-mile round-trip took approximately one and a half hours.
Due to safety/inspection issues with the tracks they are no longer able to operate the ride out of Ione.
That is where we step in. In 2017 the Newport WA Priest River ID Rotary Club will be moving the Excursion Train Rides to the southern end of Pend Oreille County. The rides will depart from Newport, WA traveling twelve miles along the Pend Oreille River, past Ashenfelter Bay, through the pines, into quaint Dalkena, WA. Wildlife abounds in this area of the county. Observant riders may see deer, eagles, moose, elk, numerous species of birds, small animals and much more! The ride is a 24 mile round trip, taking approximately 90 minutes.
Our goal is to make this an authentic “train experience”. For those interested we will have a running narrative of the history of the area playing quietly during the ride. Our hosts and volunteers will be wearing appropriate train attire. Interested riders can also participate in a Treasure Hunt where they might win a prize! Plus, you never know when we may encounter “robbers” along the route. We will also have souvenirs, entertainment, vendors and more.
